We love Portugal, it’s one of the best countries in Europe and a favorite of ours. We traveled to Lisbon for Mike’s birthday the first year we moved to Europe and it didn’t disappoint.

You can get by using just English in Portugal, especially in bigger cities and tourist destinations. About 1/3 of citizens speak and understand English and that rate is higher in the tourism sector.

Portugal is one of the safest countries in Europe and the world, ranked number 3 globally. There is always petty crime like pickpocketing in any tourist area, but Portugal is very safe for travelers. 

LGBT Safety and Precautions

Portugal is also one of the safest countries in the world for LGBT travelers and ranked number 4 globally with an A rating. Despite being a Roman Catholic country, Portugal is extremely tolerant and progressive when it comes to social policy and protecting the rights of all of its citizens.

Portugal’s largest LGBT scene is in gay Lisbon. There is a smaller gay scene in Porto and more discrete scene in the smaller cities and regions of the country.

Main Tourist Attractions

The largest cities in Portugal are the most frequently visited: Lisbon, Porto, Coimbra and Braga. The beaches of The Algarve region are world-renowned. The castles and palaces of Sintra are also popular destinations.
