The Best Areas of Salzburg to Stay
Salzburg is an easy city to navigate that’s connected with public transportation and pedestrian streets. This makes it easy to get around and walk to and from each attraction in a short period of time. Parking and even driving in the city center can be difficult, but there are garages and car parks around town where you can leave your automobile during your stay.
When you look at all the neighborhoods of Salzburg, two stand out for their beauty and concentration of things to do in the area.
Altstadt
Salzburg’s Altstadt or old town is a picturesque area of the city with winding, narrow, cobblestone streets. It’s bisected by the Salzach River and is peppered with local boutiques and iconic attractions. The city’s most significant attractions are in the Altstadt including Salzburg Cathedral, the Residenz, and Mozart’s birthplace.
The neighborhood is by far the city’s most vibrant and lively location. There is a healthy amount of nightlife and it’s a bit pricier to eat in this area of the city.
Neustadt
The Neustadt or new town is still centuries-old and historic but is a bit calmer and less crowded than the Altstadt. Still, the neighborhood oozes charm and is an easy launchpad to the attractions in Salzburg. It’s adjacent to the Altstadt and on the right banks of the Salzach River.
This area is more family-friendly and you’ll find slightly larger apartments and properties. There are still a plentiful amount of restaurant and cafe options, but it gets less of a nightlife crowd.

Ready to Book an Airbnb in Salzburg?
If you’re still reading at this point, I assume you’re ready to book a Salzburg Airbnb. Keep in mind a few tips:
- We did our best to give you prices that were available at publishing – however many properties have dynamic pricing throughout the year and additional fees. Keep that in mind and check their final charges on Airbnb with your travel dates.
- The closer to the city center and Alstadt you book a property, the more difficult parking will be. If you don’t want the added expense of a parking garage or worse, tickets, consider arriving by train, bus or air.
- In Austria, you may have to pay an additional occupancy fee in cash, so ask your host if this is required and have some euro handy just in case.
- Check-in and check-out may be remote for these properties. If so, you will be emailed a keycode to enter the property. Be sure to confirm this with the owner in advance because it’s possible you will never meet them.
